The Early Childhood Multicultural Education program provides a transferable associate degree which meets the requirements for articulation with the state of New Mexico and across the Navajo Nation and is a New Mexico state approved program under the NM Department of Education. Upon completion of the core credit hours in the degree program, students may be issued a state certificate from the Children, Youth and Families Department. The state certificate will indicate completion of the required Early Childhood Multicultural Education vocational courses. Students graduating from this program will be able to work in the early childhood educational field and/or pursue various bachelor degrees in the field of Early Childhood education. The program is consistent with the new core curriculum requirements for New Mexico, and incorporates cultural and linguistic standards required by the Navajo Nation. Courses in this program reflect Navajo family home values, beliefs, and experiences. The curriculum prepares students to demonstrate their skills and work effectively with children from birth to age 8 in a variety of settings.
An additional fee for the state-issued certificate required.
Students enrolled in this program must also:
- Submit a Teacher Education Program application to the Department of Public Education as required for Elementary Teaching (K-3)
- Maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA while in the program
Online Program Expectation
Learning online requires access to the Internet and a device (laptop, tablet, etc.). In some courses, you may be required to have additional software, a webcam, etc. If you do not have the technology required for your course, please contact your program advisor to discuss alternatives as soon as possible. Please refer to the Student E-Learning policy, and Student Online Resource, Step 8 for more information.
You also must meet the following admission requirements for online learning:
- Possess an aptitude for success in an online learning environment
- Exhibit the ability to make a positive contribution to the NTU online learning community.
- Successfully Complete the Blackboard Ultra 101 - Student Orientation Course
- Complete the Student E-Learning Policies & Procedures Student Acknowledgement Form
Early Childhood - Students completing the Early Childhood and Multicultural Education program meet the educational requirement for licensure in the state of New Mexico by passing the New Mexico Praxis Assessments - https://praxisexam.org/praxis/early-childhood-education-5025/ and Arizona by passing the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments - https://www.aepa.nesinc.com/.
In addition, students wanting to be licensed in a different state can also take the National Evaluation Series assessments - https://www.nestest.com/, and with a passing score and conferred Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood and Multicultural Education from Navajo Technical University will qualify for the state of:

- Tennessee
- Massachusetts
- Wisconsin
- Illinois
- Oregon
- Arizona
- Missouri
- California
- New Mexico
