Welcome to the Doctor of Philosophy in Diné Culture and Language Sustainability at Navajo Technical University! Our program is designed to prepare students to become leaders and experts in the field of Diné culture and language sustainability, with a focus on preserving and revitalizing the Navajo language and culture.
Our program will provide students with a rigorous and interdisciplinary education that draws on the fields of history, anthropology, literature, sociology, and cultural studies. Our faculty are experts in their fields and are committed to providing students with a supportive and engaging learning environment.
As a student in our program, you will have the opportunity to work closely with our esteemed faculty members, Dr. Siri Tuttle and Dr. Franklin Sage (Diné). Dr. Tuttle is a renowned linguist and expert in Athabaskan linguistics and community-based research, while Dr. Sage is a leading scholar in the field of Education and foundation of research, Diné research in culture and history. Their expertise and guidance will provide you with a strong foundation in the theory and practice of Diné culture and language sustainability.
Our program is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing on a range of fields including linguistics, anthropology, education, and cultural studies. You will engage with topics such as Navajo language acquisition and maintenance, traditional ecological knowledge, Navajo history and culture, language policy and planning, and community-based research.
As a student at Navajo Technical University, you will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on, experiential learning through fieldwork, internships, and community-based projects. You will work closely with Navajo communities and organizations to develop and implement culturally responsive language and culture programs that promote sustainability and revitalization.
Upon completion of our program, you will be well-prepared to pursue careers in academia, government, non-profit organizations, and community-based organizations. You will have the skills and knowledge necessary to be a leader in the field of Diné culture and language sustainability and to make a positive impact on Navajo communities and beyond.
